What is Registered Massage Therapy?

Registered Massage Therapy is a healthcare service that uses hands-on massage techniques to manipulate muscles, tissues, and joints in order to relieve pain, reduce tension, and promote overall wellness. Registered Massage Therapy is a regulated profession and can only be performed by a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) in Canada. These highly trained practitioners, having completed extensive education and clinical hours, ensuring they have the expertise to deliver safe and effective treatments. Regular sessions can be integrated into a long-term health and wellness routine, or can address a variety of conditions, from sports injuries and chronic pain to stress and postural imbalances.

RMT sessions typically begin with an assessment of the patient’s physical condition, health history, and specific concerns. Based on this, the therapist will create a personalized treatment plan. The massage itself can range from gentle relaxation techniques to deeper tissue work, depending on the desired outcomes.

Patients often leave a session feeling more relaxed, with reduced muscle stiffness, improved circulation, and more mobility.

How should I prepare for my first appointment?

Wear Comfortable Clothing: You’ll likely be asked to undress to your comfort level, but it’s best to arrive in loose, easy-to-remove clothing. During the massage, you’ll be draped with a sheet, and only the area being worked on will be exposed.

Hydrate: Drink plenty of water before your appointment. Staying hydrated helps keep your muscles flexible and can enhance the benefits of the massage.

Arrive a Little Early: If it’s your first session, arrive 10-15 minutes early to fill out any necessary paperwork and discuss your medical history and goals with the RMT. This conversation will help the RMT understand your needs and tailor the session to you.

Communicate Clearly: Before the massage begins, let the therapist know about any areas of tension, pain, or injury. Also, mention if you prefer a lighter or deeper pressure. Feel free to adjust this as the session progresses.
